UC Davis Helping Students in Challenging Economic Times

We understand the pressure that these challenging economic times have placed on families with children who are about to enter college and who are seeing the cost of a college education consuming a larger part of the family’s budget than expected.

The Financial Aid Office has seen an increase in aid applications for entering students for 2009-2010, as well as an increase in the number of students eligible for Pell Grant. We have also seen an increase in the number of families applying that have not applied for aid in the past. UC Davis has programs in place to help:

  • The UC Davis Financial Aid Estimator is available for prospective and current undergraduate, dependent, California resident students living in on-campus residence halls. By answering a few simple questions, the estimator will present you with an early estimate of your full-time cost of attendance and financial aid at UC Davis.
  • The University offers the Registration Fee Deferment Plan (RFDPP) through the Student Accounting Office. The plan allows students to pay fees on a quarterly plan, or to set up an annual plan that allows a student to pay fees monthly on a dependable schedule from September through May.
  • Our Short-Term Loan program is robust, and available to any enrolled student with temporary financial difficulties.
  • On an exceptional basis the Financial Aid Office can review special circumstances that may affect financial aid eligibility. The reviews are limited to loss of income/resources due to death, divorce, layoff, retirement, unemployment, disability, child or spousal support, medical costs, or change in the number of family members in the household. Due to the high volume of requests, the review period is very limited with a deadline of February 12, 2010.
  • We encourage students to stay focused on their economic future through careful spending choices, and by making educational expenses the highest priority. To help with budgeting and financial advice, UC Davis has partnered with the online Web site CashCourse.org. This online resource provides very user-friendly tools to help students make good choices about saving and spending money.

UC Davis Affordability

UC Davis enrolls students from all income levels, despite increases in fees and other costs. A 2007-2008 study by UC showed 32% of UC Davis students received Pell Grant , as compared to 14% at another University. UC Davis costs much less than comparable private Universities for the same world-class University education.

* Campus student budgets are determined using a combination of known institutional charges (e.g., fees and on-campus room-and-board charges) and results from the system wide Cost of Attendance Survey (COAS), conducted every three years, which provides the most comprehensive data available in UC undergraduates’ non-fee expenses. The survey provides a standardized basis for calculating student budgets at each campus that reflect local economic conditions and student spending patterns.
