UC Davis Helping Students in Challenging Economic Times

We understand the pressure that these challenging economic times have placed on families with children who are about to enter college and who are seeing the cost of a college education consuming a larger part of the family’s budget than expected. UC Davis has seen a significant increase in the number of families applying for aid. The Financial Aid Office has programs in place to help.

  • The UC Davis Net Price Calculator is available for prospective and current full-time undergraduates. By answering a few simple questions, the Net Price Calculator will present you with an early estimate of your full-time cost of attendance and financial aid at UC Davis.
  • The University offers the Deferred Payment Plan (DPP) through the Student Accounting Office. The plan allows students to pay fees on a quarterly plan, or to set up an annual plan that allows a student to pay fees monthly on a dependable schedule from September through May.
  • On an exceptional basis the Financial Aid Office can review special circumstances that may affect financial aid eligibility. The circumstances we will consider are loss of income or resources due to layoff/unemployment, disability, retirement, death, divorce, child or spousal support, medical costs, or change in the number of family members in the household. The Special Circumstance Review forms are reviewed during the fall quarter, and the deadline to submit an appeal for 2011-2012 is December 16, 2011. Any changes are retroactive for the entire academic year based on available funding.
  • Throughout the year, a number of outside organizations contact the Undergraduate & Prestigious Scholarships Office to publicize their scholarship opportunities. To help our students access the many available scholarships, we maintain the Outside Agency Scholarships page. The selection criteria, application process, and deadlines for these external scholarships vary, so please review the listings and associated websites for more detailed information. International and undocumented students are welcome to apply for these scholarships, as long as all other requirements are met. And be sure to contact these organizations directly with any questions you may have.
  • Our Emergency, Short-Term & Assistant Loan Program is robust, and available to any enrolled student with temporary financial difficulties.
  • Our Student Employment Center provides many part-time jobs for students to help with educational costs. Students can search for jobs online at jobs.ucdavis.edu.
  • We encourage students to stay focused on their economic future through careful spending choices, and by making educational expenses the highest priority. To help with budgeting and financial advice, UC Davis has put together the tools you need on our Money Management webpage.

UC Davis Affordability

UC Davis costs much less than comparable private universities for the same world-class education. UC Davis enrolls students from all income levels, despite increases in fees and other costs. As published in the 2008-09 IPEDS data collection, 31% of UC Davis undergraduates received Pell Grant, as compared to 13% at the private Northern California University used in the comparison table below.

With the UC Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan, undergraduates with a family income of up to $80,000 who meet other eligibility requirements receive grants and/or scholarships to cover in-state tuition and systemwide fees. Numerous students receive grants to help cover costs in addition to the systemwide fees and tuition, and many students with family incomes above $80,000 also qualify for financial aid. Please visit our UC Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan webpage for more information. In addition, to help mitigate the impact of tuition and fee increases faced by our students, undergraduates with a family income of up to $120,000 will most likely receive additional grant aid to offset 2011-2012 systemwide tuition and fees, including the $1,068 tuition increase approved by the UC Regents on July 14.

Campus student budgets are determined using a combination of known institutional expenses. These figures are obtained using a systemwide Cost of Attendance Survey (COAS) conducted every three years, which provides the most comprehensive data available for non-fee expenses anticipated for UC undergraduates. The survey provides a standardized basis for calculating student budgets at each campus that reflect local economic conditions and student spending patterns. UC Fees/Tuition figures listed above include the fee increase approved by the UC Regents in July 2011.
