Winners receive up to $20,000 to study abroad within specified countries and to study language. Winners receive up to $8,000 for a summer study abroad, $10,000 for a semester, and $20,000 for a full academic year program.
- U.S. Citizen
- Must work towards an undergraduate degree throughout the scholarship duration
- Must study abroad in Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, or the Middle East in a country that is critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad (see list of eligible countries on Boren website)
- Must study a foreign language during the study abroad
Strong applicants will be eligible in 3 or more of the following areas: committed to government service, are studying in a preferred country, studying a preferred language, studying in a preferred field of study, and studying for a full academic year (defined as 6 months or more). The Boren Scholarship has a complete list of preferences here. Applicants who are considering a year-long program to meet the Boren preference for length of study may wish to view a list of available programs available through the UC Education Abroad Program (EAP).
Boren Scholars are required to perform a year of service with the Federal government in a position with national security responsibilities (priority agencies are: Department of Defense, Department of State, Department of Homeland Security, or the Intelligence Community) for each year of the scholarship. Strong applicants will have a desire to work towards national security and will articulate how the study abroad program, as well as future academic and career goals, will to contribute to U.S. national security.
