Yenching Academy provides a generous postgraduate scholarship covering tuition fees, a travel stipend for one round-trip journey between each Scholar’s base city and Beijing, accommodations, and living costs on Peking University's campus.


The Yenching Academy builds bridges between China and the rest of the world through an interdisciplinary English-taught master’s program in China Studies. 

The fully-funded residential program offers a wide array of courses on China with the Humanities and Social Sciences.  Scholars will complete at least 30 academic credits that comprise of electives and three required courses, along with writing and orally defending a master’s thesis.  Chinese language study is compulsory for all international students.  The Academy organizes field studies to culturally, economically, or socio-politically significant regions within Mainland China to supplement regular studies.

Each Scholar chooses one of the following six concentrations:  Economics & Management, History & Archaeology, Law & Society, Literature & Culture, Philosophy & Religion, Politics & International Relations.


  1. Citizens from any country may apply. 
  2. A bachelor’s degree in any field must be awarded no later than August 31 of the year the applicant wishes to enroll.
  3. Must be proficient in the English language.
  4. Preference to candidates who are 25 years old or younger as of August 31 of the year they wish to commence the program.  Age preference is 27 years old or younger for those with required military service.


The Yenching Academy seeks applicants with an outstanding academic record, indications of leadership potential, as well as a record of extracurricular achievements, social responsibility and community engagement.  Applicants need to have 2 outstanding academic references.

Successful applicants will show how the Yenching Academy program is relevant and valuable for their career plans.  Previous experience in China or with the Chinese language is not required.



Candidates will submit an online application along with a curriculum vitae, personal statement, official transcripts, two letters of recommendation, and English proficiency tests scores where necessary.
