Non-California Resident Students

Financial Aid Information for Non-California Resident Students

We believe it is imperative that we inform non-California resident students of the financial aid factors that should be considered as you prepare for the academic year. It is extremely important that you arrive at UC Davis with sufficient funds at the beginning of the year to cover all fees and tuition, as well as expenses such a room, board, books and supplies.

  • For the 2011-12 academic year, the proposed out-of-state budget for students living on campus will be approximately $54,077. This comprises all fees (including out-of-state tuition of $22,878), books, living expenses, transportation, and other miscellaneous expenses. Compare your total budget with your financial aid offer on MyAwards.
  • To qualify for Federal and/or University funding, students must be a U.S. Citizen or an eligible non-citizen and must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). While financial aid is not available to cover the out-of-state tuition portion of a student's Cost of Attendance, a variety of financial aid options may be available, including grants and scholarships, depending on that student's demonstrated need. For more information, please refer to our webpage How Need is Determined For Undergraduates.
  • Non-California residents are eligible for campus-based scholarships, and will automatically be considered for those based on his or her admissions application. For continuing students, please visit our Applying for Undergraduate Scholarships webpage for details on the application process as well as the application timeline. Students will be notified by the Undergraduate & Prestigious Scholarship Office if they are awarded a scholarship. For detailed information on Scholarships at UC Davis, including joining the Scholarship Opportunities Listserv, please visit our website at financialaid.ucdavis.edu/scholarships/index.html.
  • If you expect you will need Unsubsidized/PLUS Direct and/or private loans in order to attend UC Davis, we recommend that you research all of your available resources as soon as possible. This will allow you sufficient time to make sure that you meet the qualifications set forth by the various loan programs before choosing to attend UC Davis. Please note that acceptance of PLUS loans, or private (non-institutional) loans may result in future non-resident classifications.
  • If your MyAwards offer includes Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) Direct loan eligibility, please be aware that these loans are subject to a credit check. If your PLUS loan is denied, you must be prepared to find alternative funding sources outside of the Financial Aid Office.
  • The UC Davis Net Price Calculator is available for prospective and current full-time undergraduates. By answering a few simple questions, the Net Price Calculator will present you with an early estimate of your full-time cost of attendance and financial aid at UC Davis.
  • California Residency for purposes of tuition is determined by Residence Deputies in the Office of the University Registrar, independently from Financial Aid and Admission purposes. UC residency policy considers the state of residence of students and their supporting parents in determining California residency for tuition purposes. Many out-of-state students mistakenly believe they can easily establish California residency and pay in-state fees. The process of obtaining California residency may be very difficult for non-California resident students. For information on establishing residency for tuition purposes, please visit the Registar's Office website. For information on how PLUS loans and other forms of support may impact California residency, see Financial Independence and Self-Sufficiency.
  • Throughout the year, a number of outside organizations contact the Undergraduate & Prestigious Scholarships Office to publicize their scholarship opportunities. To help our students access the many available scholarships, we maintain the Outside Agency Scholarships page. The selection criteria, application process, and deadlines for these external scholarships vary, so please review the listings and associated websites for more detailed information. International students are welcome to apply for these scholarships, as long as you meet the requirements. And be sure to contact these organizations directly with any questions you may have. We have also listed some scholarship resources at the bottom of this page.

A Message from the Office of the University Registrar

California Residence for Tuition Purposes - The facts and information you will be providing after admission on a Statement of Legal Residence are used by the campus Residence Deputy to determine if you meet the University of California definition of a California resident for the purpose of assessing tuition. Any indication of resident status for tuition purposes that you may have received during admission is provisional until a determination has been made by the residence deputy.

Statement of Legal Residence is Required - All newly admitted and readmitted students are required to return a Statement of Legal Residence form to the Office of the University Registrar. Once your residence status for tuition purposes has been determined, you will receive a notice from the campus Residence Deputy and fees will be assessed to your student account based on your residency classification.
