When a student is chosen to study abroad in another country, the EAP office will notify the Financial Aid Office (Financial Aid Office) with a list of names. The Financial Aid Office checks to see which students are financially eligible. If a student is eligible to receive financial aid, we will readjust his/her budget to the amount needed to study abroad in the country that he/she will be going. With this new budget, a student might be eligible to receive grants, loans and scholarships from financial aid and from the EAP office. The EAP office works closely with the Financial Aid Office to see which students are eligible to receive how much in scholarship and/or how much in grants. In order to receive financial aid for the EAP program, students must complete a FAFSA and apply early.

Applying for Financial Aid for EAP

How does an EAP student apply for financial aid?

Students who are studying abroad apply for financial aid by submitting the FAFSA online to the federal processor after January 1.

When is the deadline for applying for EAP aid?

The earlier a student completes the FAFSA, the earlier we can process their financial aid before they take off to go to their chosen country to study. To be considered for University Grant and Cal Grant funding, students are encouraged to apply before the March 2 deadline.

When completing the FAFSA, does a student need to state that he/she will be studying abroad?

NO. The Financial Aid Office will receive a list from the EAC office with the names of students who will be studying abroad.

If a student is in the EAP program, but has not completed a FAFSA, can they still apply for financial aid?

Yes, they can still apply. Advise the student to apply as soon as possible and to notify the UC Davis Financial Aid Office by e-mail (undergradfinaid@ucdavis.edu) when he or she files the FAFSA.

Report Outside Aid/Scholarships

Inform the Financial Aid Office of any additional resources you have received or expect to receive that are not shown on the award page of your electronic Financial Aid Notice (eFAN) (e.g., outside agency scholarships, fellowships, stipends, scholarships, research or teaching assistantships (RA/TA), post graduate research positions, or fee remissions). An overaward may result if the amount of financial aid you receive exceeds your eligibility. If that occurs you may be billed for any excess aid you received.

Awarding

If a student is going on EAP for a semester only, how does it affect a student's financial aid packet?

The Financial Aid Office will take that into consideration when packaging a student who will be studying abroad. Most likely, a student's budget will increase.

How will a student's financial aid pay for their schooling in another country?

The Financial Aid Office will disburse the money before the student leaves for the host country, usually two weeks prior to departure. Sometimes Fall Quarter funds are not processed by the time the student leaves (late summer); however, as long as the student has eligibility, the Santa Barbara office will fund the student's expenses until the aid is processed for Fall Quarter. Student Accounting will transmit the funds to Santa Barbara (University of California Education Abroad Center). The Santa Barbara and UCLA offices will then pay the student's tuition, and if there's money left, mail a check or send the funds to the student by EFT (Electronic funds Transfer). Students usually receive money quarterly if they are abroad for a whole year.

What happens if the school that the student will be attending starts earlier/later than here, how will the aid be disburse to the student?

The Financial Aid Office will try to disburse money two weeks before the student leaves the country.

What kind of additional aid is available for EAP students?

There isn't any additional aid, funding is based on the student's eligibility for financial aid and cost of attendance for the program. The funding sometimes includes scholarship awards, depending on the country in which the student will be studying.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if there's paperwork requiring the student's signature after he/she has already left the country?

Before students leave, they are given the option to sign a "Power of Attorney," which will enable a parent or close relative to sign papers for students when they are gone. If the student chooses to arrange for a Power of Attorney, he or she should provide a copy of the agreement to the UC Davis Student Accounting and Financial Aid Offices, and to the Santa Barbara EAC.

How will a student pay for his/her transportation if he/she hasn't received aid yet?

They are required to pay for their transportation first and will be reimbursed after they receive their aid. Note: students are told this when they apply to study abroad.

What happens if a student decides to quit the EAP program?

If the student resigns from the EAP program but there is not break in enrollment, Santa Barbara will revise aid and determine if the student needs to pay back money. Students usually end up owing the school money. If the student quits the EAP program and is no longer enrolled in school, a Return to Title IV calculation will be done by the Financial Aid Office.

If a student is studying abroad, where can they get a FAFSA application?

The FAFSA is available online at fafsa.ed.gov. Students (and their parents) should obtain a Personal Identification Number (PIN) online at pin.ed.gov to sign the FAFSA, make corrections, or sign the Direct Loan Promissory Note online as well.

Who should students contact about receiving their money?

Students need to contact the Santa Barbara office.

Sources of Funding

Gilman Scholarships: The State-Department funded Gilman Scholarship provides support for students studying abroad who receive Pell Grant. It informs students of low Expected Family Contribution that scholarships do exist and encourages them to think of studying abroad.

Council Bowman Travel Grants: are for students planning an educational or service experience in a developing nation in Africa, Asia, or Latin America.

Freeman-Asia Awards: are available to U.S. citizens or permanent residents for study in a number of Asian countries, including Japan. Awards range from $3,000 to $7,000.

National Security Education Program (NSEP) David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarships: provide support to U.S. undergraduates who plan to study the languages and cultures that are critical to U.S. national security and that are currently under represented in study abroad. During 2002 - 2003 EAP students attending programs in Chile, China, Egypt, India, Japan, and South Korea received these scholarships. Awards amounts typically range from $2,500 to $6,000, and can be higher.

Special Country Scholarships: Funding is also available from the governments of some host countries - in particular Germany, France, Egypt, and Japan. EAP/Mexus Scholarships are available to students participating on EAP programs in Mexico. Other Resources: Many additional scholarship opportunities exist for study abroad. Some scholarships may be available through your Campus EAP Office. EAP students are strongly encouraged to explore these opportunities - it can be an excellent investment of your time.
