Financial Aid to Study Abroad

Financial Aid for Students Participating in a Study Abroad Program

Students at UC Davis can choose to study abroad through one of the programs administered through the Education Abroad Center. Students can also study abroad through an Independent Study Abroad program. To learn how financial aid works for each of these programs, please see the summary information below, and refer to the appropriate links for additional details. Please carefully read the information provided, as it will help you better understand how financial aid works for the program you have selected. Please note that you must file the FAFSA to receive Financial Aid. You can also refer to the Education Abroad Center website for general information on funding a study abroad experience.

Education Abroad Program

The Education Abroad Center sends the names of all confirmed Education Abroad Program (EAP) participants to the UC Davis Financial Aid Office. The Financial Aid Office then receives your particular EAP program budget from the UCEAP office in Santa Barbara. Budgets, as well as other pertinent information, is available on the UCEAP website at: eap.ucop.edu/. Please note that it is really important that you become familiar with this website.

Students are packaged based on the UC Davis standard budget, and have the option to increase their direct loans or apply for outside scholarships and/or loans. If your EAP program budget is greater than the UC Davis standard budget, you will receive your standard UC Davis aid, plus an extra 50% of the unmet need created by EAP in University Grant, as long as you filed the FAFSA by March 2. Once packaging is complete, the Financial Aid Office notifies the UOEAP office in Santa Barbara by sending a Commitment Letter, or promise to pay. The Commitment Letter allows the UOEAP office in Santa Barbara to release funds to you earlier than the UC Davis scheduled disbursement date.

Question: So, how is aid disbursed again?

Answer: The UCEAP office in Santa Barbara will disburse the aid directly to you based on the Commitment Letter sent by the UC Davis Financial Aid Office.

Independent Study Abroad (Previously NUCSA)

Once you have been confirmed as participant in the Independent Study Abroad program by the Education Abroad Center and the Admission’s Office, you will receive either a Consortium or a Contractual Agreement. Students are responsible for making sure the Consortium or Contractual Agreement is sent to the Host school and then mailed, faxed, or hand delivered to the UC Davis Financial Aid Office. Students participating in the Independent Study Abroad program are NOT eligible for the University Grant. Please note that the Independent Study Abroad program is not offered for summer terms.

Your contact at the Education Abroad Center for Independent Study Abroad is Page Farrell: (530) 297 4639 or via E-mail at pdfarell@ucdavis.edu

Quarter Abroad

The Quarter Abroad Office sends the list of participants to the Financial Aid Office for packaging. Students are packaged based on UC Davis’ standard budget, and students have the option to increase their direct loans or apply for outside scholarships and/or loans. For more information on this program, please refer to the Quarter Abroad website.

Summer Abroad

The Summer Sessions Abroad Program is separate from the Education Abroad Program. To qualify for financial aid, students must have a current year FAFSA on file and also submit a Summer Financial Aid Application (see link above for details on the applicationn process). For additional information on this program, please refer to the Summer Abroad website.
