SMART (Science, Mathematics & Research for Transformation) Scholarship


Winners of the Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship receive full tuition and fees along with a stipend of $25,000 - $38,000, up to $1,200 for health insurance, up to $1,000 for books, a paid summer internship, and employment with the Department of Defense (DOD) upon graduation. These award amounts are annual and the scholarship can be renewed.


  1. U.S. citizen
  2. Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student
  3. Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater
  4. Be pursuing an eligible major

Candidate Profile

Applicants should have interest in a research career and upperclassmen should have demonstrated research experience. Applicants should have a desire to work for the DOD, as there is a requirement to work one (1) year with the DOD for each year that the scholarship is received, and recipients are required to work summer internships with the DOD for the duration of the scholarship.

Campus Procedure

Students interested in applying for SMART Scholarships need to submit a completed Applicant Profile to the Undergraduate and Prestigious Scholarship Office at The Undergraduate and Prestigious Scholarships Office will work with each applicant to modify and strengthen the application to prepare it for submission. Once the application is ready for submission, the applicant will need to submit the final application through the SMART website.
