Budgeting and Money Management 101

How Has Budgeting Changed My Life?

As a first-generation college student, budgeting and money management were new concepts to me as I embarked on my college journey my freshman year. After a few weeks, I quickly learned that I needed to learn how to spend and save my money. Following the tips below helped me save and invest my money in various ways throughout the years:

1. Planning

Planning my meals, daily activities, and finances helped me achieve my short-term goals of money management. I learned that before I went to any grocery stores, it was important for me to plan what I was going to buy and how much money I was able to spend. Being an active planner helps us reduce overspending and avoid buying unnecessary items.

2. Needs vs. Wants

Learning the difference between what is a "need" and what is a "want" has been life-changing. “Needs” include things such as basic living expenses, housing, food, and clothing. “Wants” include extra things that you would like to buy for entertainment and miscellaneous purposes. Next time you go to the grocery store or shopping ask yourself "Is this a Need or a Want?".

3. Budgeting

The first time I tried budgeting, I used a paper and pencil to write down all of my expenses, but I quickly realized that was not an efficient method for me. I learned that I prefer budgeting through apps such as Mint. I liked that the Mint app synched my expenses from my debit and credit cards and automated spending limits according to the money in my account. Having this accessible on my phone helped me check my budget anywhere I was. Learning what budgeting method works for me guided me in making money-savvy decisions frequently.

4. Campus Resources

Campus Resources such as Aggie Compass Basic Needs, The Pantry, and the Aggie Blue to Gold Financial Wellness Program are essential programs that help students meet their needs. Visiting The Pantry during my second year helped me save money and eat nutritious foods. Utilizing all campus resources can help reduce extra costs within your budget.

These are just a few tips on how to manage your money. For more ideas and resources, visit the Aggie Blue to Gold Financial Wellness Program.
